Subject [jira] Commented: (HDFS-245) Create symbolic links in HDFS

Owen O'Malley commented on HDFS-245:
------------------------------------

I'd like to bring up the issue again of throwing exceptions between the FileSystem implementations
to notify the framework that there is a link to an external resource. That seems a lot cleaner
than making every single method return a variant type that is sometimes the file handle (or
other outcome of the method) and sometimes an address of the new path to look in. If the SPI
always returned link info, I would lean the other way. But since the SPI does do a dereference
of the link, except in the case of an external link, leads me to like the use of the exception
as a mechanism to signal the condition.

It is a shame that this isn't looking like it will make 0.21's cutoff.

> HDFS should support symbolic links. A symbolic link is a special type of file that contains
a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that
affects pathname resolution. Programs which read or write to files named by a symbolic link
will behave as if operating directly on the target file. However, archiving utilities can
handle symbolic links specially and manipulate them directly.
