How about using [UUID|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universally_Unique_Identifier]? They have
advantages:
- can be calculated independently by any process.
- guaranteed to be unique globally, even across two different HDFS instances, which would
make it easier if we want to build a federated file system.
