Subject [jira] [Created] (HDFS-4137) BlockManager.chooseTarget's error message can be confusing
Date Thu, 01 Nov 2012 21:14:12 GMT
Jean-Daniel Cryans created HDFS-4137:

Summary: BlockManager.chooseTarget's error message can be confusing
                 Key: HDFS-4137
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-4137
             Project: Hadoop HDFS
          Issue Type: Improvement
    Affects Versions: 2.0.2-alpha
            Reporter: Jean-Daniel Cryans
             Fix For: 2.0.3-alpha

Consider this message:

bq. org.apache.hadoop.ipc.RemoteException(java.io.IOException): File *somefile* could only
be replicated to 0 nodes instead of minReplication (=1). There are 1 datanode(s) running
and no node(s) are excluded in this operation.

Obviously a node was excluded but not in the sense that the Datanode treats it. Considering
that this is a message that noobs will see a lot, making it clearer will be a win.
