If uploading files from a non-HDFS file system:

Install the hadoop distribution, configure it to talk to your namenode, make
sure there are no firewall restrictions (tcp ports 8020, 50010, 50070,
50075) and then simply run "hadoop dfs -put <localsrc> <dst>"
