Ok, now i'm back to the master not connecting to the region.
Here's what I did:

updated hadoop-site.xml and changed the root dir to be /tmp/hadoop-0-15

updated hbase-site.xml and changed the port of the region to be 60020

ran hadoop namenode -format (formatted ok)

ran hadoop dfs -touchz /myfile.txt
    hadoop dfs -ls /
    /myfile.txt     <r 3>   0       2007-11-02 10:48

started hbase and got the following:
