Thanks [~mackrorysd] for the review. Good point that mkdirs() is recursive, I have updated
the patch to handle this case up to root.

Per your suggestion, I have replaced new Path() with path() and have added a method javadoc
for trailingPeriodCheck().

Posted a new patch. Please review. Thanks.
