Subject [jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-11875) [JDK9] Renaming _ as a one-character identifier to another identifier

Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-11875:

I think we need to do this. It is time, and the time begins with a 3.0

I note there is actually one possible backwards compatibility strategy, producing a special
jar of old hamlet stuff which people could use until they've moved. But that might just discourage
people from migrating, which is fine if they build and run on java 8, but if anything is distributed
to run on java 9, things will break downstream then.

> From JDK9, _ as a one-character identifier is banned. Currently Web UI uses it. We should
fix them to compile with JDK9. https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8061549
