Side-comment for whoever works on this:

The logic for locating the valid HADOOP_CONF_DIR might/will need to get changed as well. 
It currently uses the location of hadoop-env.sh as the 'valid' one.

examples.  This goes a long way with being able to upgrade the binaries in place since we
would no longer overwrite those files upon extraction.
