That's weird about the test failures - they don't seem related to my change. I see a lot of exceptions of the sort:

Caused by: java.io.IOException: Server asks us to fall back to SIMPLE auth, but this client is configured to only allow secure connections.
	at org.apache.hadoop.security.SaslRpcClient.saslConnect(SaslRpcClient.java:250)
