Subject [jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-9421) Convert SASL to use ProtoBuf and add lengths for non-blocking processing

Luke Lu commented on HADOOP-9421:

bq. Given today's network speeds, I'm not going to fret over a handful of bytes that greatly
enhance the design of the authentication layer.

It's not the bytes but a whole new network/rpc round trip that can be easily avoided. In WAN
and/or when the network is busy the round trip latency can easily be in hundreds of ms.

bq. That patch resulted in an average 1% penalty and a median 2% penalty to the first RPC
call using kerberos authentication - which translates to less than 10ms.

10ms / 1% means the total latency is 1 second! Something is not right here.

bq. I can likely erase it by removing the unnecessary connection context

I doubt it, the unnecessary connection context is in the noise compared with a network/rpc
round trip.
