Todd Lipcon commented on HADOOP-9151:
-------------------------------------

Hi Sanjay. I mentioned CDH out of transparency, but I think it's beneficial for Hadoop 2.0.x
and 2.1.x to remain wire-compatible with 2.0.2 and earlier, if possible. Even outside of CDH,
people are using 2.0.x, and we should try to make their lives easier, unless we have a substantial
reasoning to break compatibility.

As for your question: no, you'd need a client side change in order to be able to interpret
the earlier version responses. Certainly we could make a change in CDH which would allow the
next version of CDH to be compatible both with Hadoop 2.0.3+ clients and also 2.0.2 (by switching
on the IPC version that the client connects with). But, as a community contributor, I think
we should strive to maintain wire compatibility between Apache Hadoop versions unless we've
got a good reason to break it, vendor distributions aside.
