Subject [jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-8804) Improve Web UIs when the wildcard address is used

Senthil V Kumar commented on HADOOP-8804:

I was looking at JSPs which has got the IP addresses goofed up. All of these JSPs/Servlet
seem to use StringUtils.simpleHostname. This method assumes that it will always get hostnames
and splits the string by '.' and returns only the first part eg: sample.host.name will return
sample. Options to fix:

1) Modify all the pages that use this method to use it only if the give string is a valid
hostname. This will require modification in minimum 10 places. Not stripping also involves
the same effort.
2) Enhance StringUtils.simpleHostname method to do the stripping off only when it is a valid
hostname. This will be simple change.

To enhance this method, we could use Regex to validate IPv4 and IPv6 addresses or Guava library
which provides InetAdress.forString method that can be used to validate IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
Guava is bundled with trunk but not 1.0.

Let me know which option I should go for. Can I add guava to 1.0 if we are going with option

> When IPC addresses are bound to the wildcard (ie the default config) the NN, JT (and
probably RM etc) Web UIs are a little goofy. Eg "0 Hadoop Map/Reduce Administration" and "NameNode
'' (active)". Let's improve them.
