I agree with Nicholas. We should reverse the patch.
The problem is solved by a simple one line change:

static byte[][] getPathComponents(String[] strings) {
-  if (strings.length == 0) {
+  if (strings == null || strings.length == 0) {
    return new byte[][]{null};
  }
