dhruba borthakur commented on HADOOP-3637:
------------------------------------------

After a few rounds of discussions, it was found that snapshots can be designed very elegantly
only if there is complete separation between namespace management and block management. Currently,
both these functionality are managed by the namenode. HADOOP-5015 is a step in this direction.

> Support HDFS snapshots. It should support creating snapshots without shutting down the
file system. Snapshot creation should be lightweight and a typical system should be able to
support a few thousands concurrent snapshots. There should be a way to surface (i.e. mount)
a few of these snapshots simultaneously.
