when we're on a key or a value when doing a readString by having some sort of elementIndex.
Hacky, but effective and somewhat like TDenseProtocol - there's nothing to do but to have
state in the protocol and this is preferable to having state in DynamicSerDe since there may
be all sorts of protocols.
