ah, but persistency across restarts is key. that's when errors happen most often.
Currently the information seems persistent. In our DFS I see nodes that connected once only,
many restarts ago.
Perhaps removing the functionality from the namenode can be postponed until equivalent functionality
is introduced in helper applications.
