I'll take up the first piece for the Linux distros if no one minds...

Doug: Right now, native hadoop needs only zlib-dev packages and GNU autotools chain to build on Linux. When you noted Redhat/Fedora & Ubuntu did you have specific instructions for each of Linux distros with specific package-names in mind? I'd appreciate if you could clarify it...
