Subject [jira] Created: (HADOOP-300) ability to report numeric progress within a particular key

ability to report numeric progress within a particular key
----------------------------------------------------------

         Key: HADOOP-300
         URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-300
     Project: Hadoop
        Type: Improvement

  Components: mapred
    Versions: 0.3.2
    Reporter: Owen O'Malley
 Assigned to: Owen O'Malley
    Priority: Trivial

I'd like some mechanism to report numeric progress in maps that have side effects. In the
common case, there is exactly one key/value for each map and they do a lot of work (minutes
to hours) while working on that key. It would be nice if mapred.Reporter had a progress(float)
method that set the progress within the current key.
