OK, building Xalan-J with JDK 1.3 and Jikes fails (even outside of Gump) at the same position the Kaffe build fails. If I run it a second time, it passes. So I assume jikes is not adding some output directory to the classpath where Sun's javac does. I'll investigate the verbose output and let you know.
