You could try a newer java version to ensure it is not a jvm bug. You 
could run the JVM with -Xverify:none to avoid the problem

As for 1.8.9 being faster... really? strange.

I am pretty sure that is not supposed to be the case... question is 
where to report this to... apache infrastructure is still new to me.
