Beside John's suggestion, I provide you another:

try {
   def returnValue
   try {
      ...
      returnValue = ... 
   } finally {
      ... // some exception(e.g. exceptionX) is thrown
   }

   return returnValue;
} catch (Throwable t) { // the exceptionX can be caught
      ... 
}
