I suppose this speaks to one of the drawbacks of the move to apache, there's no obvious way
for monetary contributions‎ to particular projects or portions of a project.

Maybe not a drawback per se. An opportunity perhaps?

If the plugin is important to you, there is nothing stopping your 
organization resourcing the maintenance of the plugin.
