In geronimo 2.1.7 and 2.2, derby authentication is enabled by default. So you have to input username and password: dbadmin/manager when create datasource.Otherwise there will be errors.
What you started out trying to do with derby ought to work. Unfortunately I'm not likely to have time to investigate why it didn't.
