BTW, I set JAVA_HOME in ~/.profile along with a few other environment variables for ANT, MAVEN,
etc. i.e.:

~/.profile:

     export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Home

Alternatively, you can create a bin/setenv.sh file. Downside is that you have to create this
file for every installation/reinstall.

bin/setenv.sh:

     JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Home

geronimo.sh used to require that either JAVA_HOME or JRE_HOME were set. Not sure what happened
to these checks.
