I think the <external-rar> has been replaced with <external-path>.
You can look at the daytrader example -

Or the uddi app provided by geronimo server -
GRONIMO_HOME/repository/org/apache/geronimo/configs/uddi-jetty6/2.2-SNAPSHOT/uddi-jetty6-2.2-SNAPSHOT.car/META-INF/plan.xml

Search for "external-path" to see how it is defined in the
geronimo-application.xml file. (BTW, I don't think geronimo-web.xml
would work, basically, you need to define the content of
geronimo-web.xml within <module>...</module> elements, in
geronimo-application.xml.)
