Yes, unfortunately, most of the deployment plan examples are obsolete.
 Generally, the 1.0-style plans can be upgraded to 1.1 (either
automatically or with a supplied tool -- Davi J, how does that work?),
so it shouldn't stop you, but there's definitely a 1.1 update to the
book on the way.
