I don't think a = space in the install directory name was your real problem. I think the real problem you had was somehow = starting=20 (part of) the client configuration in your server:
 
Started configuration 23/25   1s=20 geronimo/client-system/1.0/car
Started configuration = 24/25   0s=20 geronimo/client/1.0/car

I think your fresh install corrected = this=20 problem.  I don't think a space in the install directory name was = your real=20 problem.
