I did some debug work for this problem, and find that during geronimo startup, SerializedConfigurationMarshaler constructs ConfigurationData from config.ser file, but the configurationData has childConfigurations as null.

May refer to JIRA Geronimo-4972 for the solution and discussion of nested configuration from ear.
