we should probably be using the vm transport for the connectors.

It would be great if we could put in some substitutions into the spring config file.  I looked
around a bit and didn't see any way to supply spring with substitutions in code.  I'd like
it to work by giving spring the substitutions before it looks at the config file.  Do you
see a way to do this?  The only way to use substitutions I saw was to include a component
in the config file that e.g. looked up a properties file itself.
