Subject [jira] Commented: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-511) Provide zip download of Geronimo Eclipse Plugin complete with requisites

Tim McConnell commented on GERONIMODEVTOOLS-511:

My two cents:

1) The initial request from Jürgen Weber would actually be fairly simple to provide, especially
since we already do pretty much the exact thing when we build the GEP. We download the platform-specific
version of Eclipse that we require into our local M2 repo to create Eclipse installation.
Aslo, when we invoke the GEP testsuite we do the same but then install all the GEP features/plugins
in the that Eclipse installation. So we have everything in place -- we would only have to
zip them up and make them available. Alternatively, instead of storing the resultant zip/tar
file(s) we might consider just making the Ant/Maven scripts available to accomplish the same
thing. But even if we do this I'm not sure it would simplify much for the end-user since the
current installation process is almost trivial (in my opinion) especially with the all-in-one
Eclipse bundles that provides all the prereqs.

2) Actually, I have thought quite a bit about a so-called "Geronimo Studio" that Jürgen Weber
suggests and think we should consider it or at least discuss in more detail. I can envision
this as a light-weight development environment that follows the same model as the Geronimo
server. Namely, to integrate and incorporate various other open-source development projects
(i.e., Eclipse plugins) into an integrated Java EE development environment specifically for
Geronimo. A single download with imbedded Geronimo server(s), GEP, other open-source Eclipse
plugins that provide function not currently in the GEP, and possibly some tutorials/samples,
might be appealing to many users, especially those who want to experiment with and/or prototype
with Geronimo. I could go on forever, but the idea here would be to provide everything the
user wants/needs in a development environment without them having to download everything separately
and then installing and configuring them -- the very same rationale we have for using the
Geronimo server.

> Please provide a zip / tar.gz download of Geronimo Eclipse Plugin complete with all requisites,
inclusive a stripped-down Eclipse itself.
> The zip should not contain eclipse as root folder but rather eclipseGeronimo to not overwrite
the default Eclipse installation.

lots of dependencies you need in the right version.
> Installing via Eclipse-Help-Software Updates does not work either as the Update manager
is not smart enough to install requisites:
> Geronimo v1.0 Server Adapter (2.0.0) requires feature "org.eclipse.jst (2.0.0)", or compatible
> The given ant script does not work behind our firewall, and I am not keen on figuring
out how the firewall options of ant work.
