Why not just add the following to the POMs?

        <plugins>
            <plugin>
                <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
                <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
                <configuration>
                    <source>1.4</source>
                    <target>1.4</target>
                </configuration>
            </plugin>
        </plugins>

Regards,
Alan
