Highly available NFS solutions are available e.g. www.netapp.com (not an
endorsement) which internally use redundant paths to avoid any single point
of failure. There are many, many other solutions available which avoid the
overhead of the database (e.g. multi-ported disk, SAN storage, shared
memory, ...)

These may not be cheap, but they do offer an alternative for central shared
storage.
