I've been making a bit of progress in the issue.

It looks like the xm4j.adaptor.jrmp.JRMPAdaptor, when starting, has a JMX name, and it uses
this to calculate the JNDI name. However, the JNDI name is only based on the 'path', (getJNDIName()/setJNDIName()
from the JMX name.

The path is 'target space', which then fails as this is an invalid name to use in the URL.
However, I'm not sure why 'target space' is being used as the JNDI name for this component

Here is an overview of the issue:
        Key: GERONIMO-22
Summary: [patch] spaces in deploy url
       Type: Bug

     Status: Assigned
   Priority: Minor

 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: Apache Geronimo

   Assignee: Jason Dillon
   Reporter: Brent Worden

    Created: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 11:19 AM
    Updated: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 11:40 AM

I changed DeployURL to check file URLs and "normalize" them. This solves the spaces in path
error Jason was witnessing.
