You have to change the padding attribute. 
http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_padding.asp can be a start.

in skinconf.xml
<extra-css>
#menu .menuitem {
         padding: 0px 0px 2px 12px;
         background-image: url('images/page.gif');
         background-repeat: no-repeat;
         background-position: center left;
         font-weight : normal;
         margin-left: 10px;
