Here's another suggestion which require more work, but would do away 
with the manual numbering:

<p>Some text<span class="footnote">Fotnote text</span> and more 
text.</p>

Then, in the appropriate XSLT, this structure could be turned into 
Stefano's, but with automatic numbering. It should not be too hard.

Just an idea.
