Can't using <xsl:for-each> as "for-loop"

I would like to use following one to transform xml.

<xsl:for-each select="position() &lt; $num"> <!-- $num is variable that has number value. -->
  <td/>
</xsl:for-each>

But I have error message "Can not convert #BOOLEAN to a NodeList!".
