Is it as simple as <img ... align="left" />? (This is how I'm doing it
for FOP & Batik, although I'm actually editing HTML files instead of
xdocs...). Here's what I have:

<a name="N10017"></a><a name="apachecon"></a>
<h3 class="underlined_10">Come to ApacheCon US 2004</h3>
<div class="section">
<p>

<a class="external" href="http://apachecon.com/2004/US/">
           <img alt="apachecon 2004 logo" height="100"
src="http://ApacheCon.Com/2004/US/logos/logo_only.gif" width="170"
align="left" hspace="10">
         </a>
         <a class="external"
href="http://apachecon.com/2004/US/">ApacheCon US 2004</a>
           (13-17 November 2004). ApacheCon is the conference for all
           things Apache. Come along and learn about a range of new
           technologies, meet some Apache folks and share the knowledge.
           See more information about
          <a
href="http://www.apache.org/foundation/conferences.html">Apache
Conferences</a>.
       </p>
</div>
<br clear="left"/>

To see how it really looks, you can see:

xml-site/targets/fop
xml-site/targets/batik

on minotaur.apache.org... You can see what it will look like here:

http://www.apache.org/~clay/xml-fop/index.html

NOTE: I placed a <br clear="left" /> at the bottom to ensure the next
heading starts *under* the image.
