Probably there is a misunderstanding :-)

I mean that pdf files can have a pdf icon next to them, mail links an envelope icon, zip files
a package icon, external html links the usual external link icon, and links that refer to
inexisting entries in site.xml with a 'broken' icon.

The last point means that if a link uses site:xxx and teh xxx node is not present, a broken
icon will appear, as it's  evident that it does not point anywhere. No more than this.

would be very helpful in spotting broken links
