I've attempted to modify openoffice-writer2forrest.sxl to process merged rows and columns
in OOo documents. I though I was making progress when I found that an OOo file was processed
by my modified .xsl file (using saxon) to produce a forrest .xml file that looked like it
should render sensible HTML.

Alas! Although the Forrest xml produced by Saxon does produce sensible output when included
in site.xml, the original OOo .sxw file produces different output, even though (I would have
thought) it is being processed by the same openoffice-writer2forrest.xsl file.

Something is happenining differently depending on whether Forrest processes the .sxw file
all the way by itself, or whether I do part of the work manually (using Saxon and the .xsl
file to produce an intermediate forrest file for forrest to process).

What's up? Is it Saxon behaving differently than Forrest's xsl processing? Or is it that the
forrest DTD doesn't like the material it's getting from the xsl file and is dropping some
of it? Or what?

I will (try to) attach various files (if I can work out how JIRA allows this):

1 My sample OOo file which includes tables with merged cells.
2 Extracts from the modified openoffice-writer2forrest.xsl, that hopefully deal with the merged
3 The xml file that saxon generates from the first two (a plausible treatment of the merged
4 The HTML that Forrest generates from 3 (a pretty good start)
5 the HTML that Forrest generates if it does all the processing itself (a mess!)

Here is an overview of the issue:
        Key: FOR-262
Summary: openoffice2forrest: add support for merged cells in tables
       Type: Improvement

     Status: Unassigned
   Priority: Major

    Project: Forrest

Processing of OpenOffice files is useful, but tables containing merged cells are not handled
properly, preventing the use of many OpenOffice documents with Forrest.

If you merge two cells in OOo you get this attribute: table:number-columns-spanned="2" and
this could translate into the HTML colspan="2" attribute. But it's not happening - does this
first require an enhancement of the Forrest DTD? Which seems to contain the following:

<!ENTITY % cell.span 'colspan CDATA "1"
         rowspan CDATA "1"'> and

Does this prevent cells from spanning rows and columns?
