I forgot to mention half of the problem.

Last-Modified HTTP Header has not been returned when you make the request.

This java script will not work unless document.lastModified returns a value. On its absent
it takes "epoch" Unix time.

I thought that this was an issue with the servlet engine, but it seems to be a diferent problem.

We can:

a) Find out why Last-Modified has not been returned.

b) Implement server side instead.

As per your suggestion, I did use jetty now, but strangely,

the page footer says:
"Last Published: January 1, 1970 GMT"
