I don't think that the date parameter is required in this case.
I used this to merge the fix from HEAD to the RC branch:

>cvs up -r FORREST_05_BRANCH page.css

this retrieves the latest version of page.css in the specified branch and
then

>cvs up -j HEAD page.css

this one merges all the modifications from HEAD into the current branch.

Is there anything wrong with this approach?
