AFAIK, can't really be done for new directories.

For new files, I use:

cvsdo add <file>
cvs diff -RuN > patch

Where 'cvsdo' is from http://www.red-bean.com/cvsutils/

Might be easiest just to upload everything onto icarus, and set the
directory +rx so we can have a look.
