quite common on Unix boxes.  When you do something with AWT, most Unix
JVMs will need access to an X-Windows-Server (this is at least true
for the Solaris and Linux VMs I know).

If there is none running, you are in trouble, but the solution is
simple: Install Xvfb, start it before you start the script and set the
DISPLAY environment variable correctly.

i.e. before you run the script (or as the first thing inside the
script) do

Xvfb :1 &
DISPLAY :1.0; export DISPLAY

you may need to perform some additional configuration with respect to
authentication, please consult the manual pages 8-)
