What about this for custom images:
<img src="images/xxx/myimage.jpg">
<img src="images/yyy/myimage.jpg">
<img src="images/zzz/myimage.jpg">

and simply for commons:
<img src="images/myimage.jpg">

Why to have a copy of the same image for whatever reason? If they are
different then it's Ok to have 'xxx' or 'yyy' in the source attribute.

But, I can tell from my experience, that image-dirs can change in a very
unexpected way. Say, someday we can decide to have a central image
repository for all projects in and setup a default context on
the server optimized for for all the static resources. In this case we
should use references like src="/images/myimg.jpg".

The other day we will need to load images from a special image server, say: This time we should use

Hm... Ignore all the above: this can be achieved using URL rewriting on the
Web server, isn't it?.. ;)

Please tell me if I am totally wrong?
