could you add some simple print statements in the MapFunction class to see whether the first
iteration works correctly?

I'll have to look into the java lifecycle of iterations to provide a better assessment, but
i have a hunch it's related to the assumption that an operator is only used once, and not
multiple times as is the case for iterations.
