One thing I like about SVN is that it discourages branching to necessary

SVN discourages branching because branching inherently sucks in SVN.

Git encourage branching because branching is a lot better designed in Git.

There isn't a huge movement to Git and GitHub because developers like pain.
Developers are lazy people that want tools that make their lives easier,
not harder.

The proof is in the pudding, its not a coincidence that GitHub has gotten
so huge. Projects like the Linux kernel moved to Git for a reason, that
reason is SVN sucks.
