I take it this would require that I run the Felix as non-embedded, right?

Basically, I just want to show my supervisor how it handles starting and stopping bundles,
and I'd favor the easiest possible setup.

Would the shell console be a better option?

You need to install and start the web management console (look for "web
console" on http://felix.apache.org/site/downloads.cgi) and point your
browser to http://localhost:8080/system/console
