thanks for reply; first I had in the logs: 
 
not enough heap memory..
then it was this:
[2008-11-26 13:37:49] [info] Starting service...
[2008-11-26 13:37:49] [173 javajni.c] [error] The specified module could not be found.
[2008-11-26 13:37:49] [924 prunsrv.c] [error] Failed creating java C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_16\jre\bin\java.dll
[2008-11-26 13:37:49] [1179 prunsrv.c] [error] ServiceStart returned 1
[2008-11-26 13:37:49] [info] Run service finished.
 
I use XP pro with no Sp..the paths are there..same behaviour with 1.0 and 1.5.4 :)
