Subject NPE

I am using ApacheDS 1.5.3 and I am trying to index an attribute that is
part of a custom schema I added by manually running an LDIF import using
directory studio.  I did verify the schema is there and I have tried
both the attribute name and OID in my server.xml.  This is the exception
I am receiving:
