I've started by copying the ldap-codec over to ldap-codec-standalone. I will now do the following:

# Rename the DefaultLdapCodecService to StandaloneLdapCodecService to make way for a new pure OSGi based DefaultLdapCodecService.
# Copy over ldap-codec to ldap-codec-standalone.
# Prune away the ldap-codec-standalone module just to contain the StandaloneLdapCodecService implementation which embeds Felix and some associated helper classes.
# Make the ldap-codec-standalone into a plain old jar, not an OSGi bundle so no one accidentally tries to use it in an OSGi environment.
# Create a simple DefaultLdapCodecService and a BundleActivator to register it.
# Make the StandaloneLdapCodecService start up Felix, load the ldap-codec jar, get a reference to the LdapCodecService registration, and wrap calls to it.
